Bio
Camilla Fransrud (b. 1974, Oslo) is a Norwegian contemporary painter based in Trondheim. Self-taught, she works primarily in acrylic, creating abstract and figurative pieces inspired by the sea and surrounding landscapes. Her dreamlike works invite viewers to reflect on their own emotions and sense of connection with nature.
I create immersive Abstract landscapes that collectors describe as ‘Feelable’ Working in acrylic and mixed media with chalk, sand and palette knife ,I build tactile, atmospheric surfaces where light, memory, and silence accumulate.
I see landscape as a threshold-between the external and the internal, between what is observed and what is remembered. With a background in photography and a practice that includes poetry ,my work is rooted in a trained eye for light and composition, and a lyrical approach to storytelling. Yet the work itself becomes that threshold. Not an image of a place, but a place in itself. Horizons that hold. Mist that lingers. Surfaces that invite the hand as much as the eye.
My voice is Nordic, shaped by the sea, light and restraint of Norway. Yet, I carry a global Atlas of impressions into the studio, from the raw Atlantic presence of Devon and Cornwall to the urban and ancient dialogues of Rome, Palermo, New York and Toronto. These geographies merge within me, creating a tension between North and South, containment and release, stillness and warmth. This duality forms the architecture of every canvas.
Material intelligence is central to my practice. I build slowly, layer by layer, allowing irregularity and rupture to remain visible. Each surface carries a history - the trace of the hand, the weight of a decision, the shadow of a doubt. In a culture of the instantaneous, these paintings insist on time. It is made to be lived with, these are pieces that grow on the viewer, gaining depth rather than diminishing over the years.
Collectors seek my work for its lyrical evocative atmosphere and its distinct physical presence-the way its slows a room down and introduces permanence. Its true power lies in its materiality, the way light shifts across sand and chalk, the way silence becomes tangible. It must be experienced in person to be fully understood.
My Work is held in private collections across Europe, the UK and the US. It speaks to those seeking contemporary work with emotional gravity, material presence, and a sense of place that transcends geography.
For me the act of creation is the act of constructing a threshold. Between sea and silence. Between what is seen, and what is sensed. Cross it, and find where you’ve been all along.
